Carrying on yesterday’s Jerome Cooper vibe - the only recorded outing from his amazing quintet - Cooper, Joseph Jarman, William Parker, Thurman Baker, Jason Hwang - released by About Time in 1988. A really stunning piece of work, and a shining star among the slim canon of American free jazz from the 80s. Highly recommend! #ontheturntable #nowplaying #jeromecooper #jeromecooperquintet #freejazz
Another longtime obsession going ‘round and ‘round, by one of my favorite percussionists of all time. Crazy essential and not spoken of enough. Issued by Anima in 1982. #ontheturntable #nowplaying #freejazz #jeromecooper
Starting the day with this one - the latest release on Otoroku, @cafeotodalston ‘s always stellar imprint. Definitely on of the more surprising records of the year, Ahmed is the quartet of Pat Thomas, Antonin Gerbel, Joel Grip, and Seymour Wright. They’re playing tomorrow at Oto for those in London who want to check them out. #ontheturntable #nowplaying #otoroku
Some shots from a lovely night at @cafeotodalston with one of my nearest and dearest, @johnchantler , + fantastic sets from @angharaddavie and @xcrswx (Crystabel Riley / Seymour Wright)
A crucial document from Loft Era, and the great Earl Freeman’s debut outing as a leader / composer, issued by Billy Bang’s private imprint, Anima, in 1975. The line up is pretty crazy - Dave Wertman, William Parker, Paul Chambers, Billy Bang, and @danielcarternyc to name just a few. Essential! #ontheturntable #nowplaying #freejazz #loftjazz
Still holding strong after 16 years - so fucking good - as with everything Jim’s ever touched. (Loose Fur - S/T @dragcityrecords - 2003) #ontheturntable #nowplaying #loosefur
